Whitni Howell named Jefferson City’s head softball coach
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Jefferson City High School alum is returning to her alma mater.
On Friday, the Jefferson City School District announced that Whitni Howell will be taking over as the new head coach of its softball program.
Howell, who was a graduate of Jefferson City's Class of 2010, brings more than nine years of coaching experience to the Jays. She spent the last two seasons as the leader of Hickman's high school softball team (2023-24), guiding them to 14 combined wins during that span. Before that, Howell was an assistant coach at Capital City (2019-22) for four years, helping lead the Cavaliers to three straight 20+ win seasons.
She also has a wealth of playing experience. Howell was an All-State selection at Jefferson City (2006-10) and was a member of the program's first-ever state championship team. After graduating from Jefferson City, Howell took her talents to Columbia College where she was a two-time All-Conference honoree.
"I'm thrilled to bring my playing and coaching experience to a program known for its winning mindset and commitment to excellence," Howell said in a press release. "With a deep-rooted passion for the game and a ton of Jay Pride, I'm committed to building on the strong tradition of JCHS softball and helping shape champions on and off the field."
Howell will strive to lead Jefferson City to its third straight winning season during the 2025 campaign. The Jays own a 39-27 combined record over the last two years but haven't won a district title since 2018.
Hickman will now begin searching for the next leader of its softball program.
