Jefferson City earns second place in state tournament, completes program’s best season
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KMIZ)
Jefferson City Volleyball has cemented itself in the program record books. The Jays claimed second place in the Class 4 State Tournament on Thursday evening, marking the team's best finish in program history.
After reaching the program's first-ever state championship game with Wednesday's win over Lutheran St. Charles, head coach Ali Eskens' group finished just two sets shy of winning a state title, falling to St. Pius X (Festus) 3-1 at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau.
The Jays made a statement in the first set, winning the opening frame by 11 points to take a 1-0 advantage in the match. However, St. Pius responded by sweeping the next three sets, defeating Jefferson City 25-21, 25-16 and 25-22 respectively.
Offensively, Nola Borgmeyer and Leah Heisler led the charge for the Jays. Borgmeyer paced the team with 15 kills while Heisler tallied 13 kills and one service ace. Defensively, Aydia Mayotte posted a team-high 19 digs.
Jefferson City ends its 2024 campaign with a 27-8 overall record, the program's highest win total since 2019.
