Helias names new head coaches for 2024-25 athletic year

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Three Helias athletics programs will be under new leadership next school year. The school has announced head coaching changes for its high school baseball, boys soccer and boys tennis teams for the 2024-25 athletics season.

Kelly Fick will be taking over Helias' high school baseball program for Chris Wyrick, who is stepping down from the position after 25 years as the team's head coach. Fick has served as the school's head softball coach since 2017 and will continue to lead that program next season. The Helias alum played college baseball at Mizzou and earned All-State honors as a pitcher in high school.

“I appreciate the administration having the confidence in me to lead the Helias Catholic baseball program. I'm grateful for this opportunity and look forward to teaching and coaching our baseball student-athletes,” Fick said in Thursday's press release. “The baseball program has a long-standing tradition of success both on and off the field. It's exciting to have the opportunity to lead the program into the future.”

Chuck Register was named the new head coach of Helias' boys soccer program, replacing Jon DeSha who has served as the leader of both the school's boys and girls soccer teams since 2021. DeSha will continue to serve as the head coach of the girls soccer program.

Register returns to Helias after leading Father Tolton Girls Soccer since the 2015-16 school year. Before winning a state championship with the Trailblazers in 2023, Register coached both the boys and girls soccer programs at Helias from 1999-2012. In his 920-game coaching career, he has reached the Final Four 11 times.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Coach Register home to Helias Catholic and confident our student-athletes will benefit greatly from his leadership and knowledge of the game,” Assistant Principal and Director of Athletics and Activities Dwayne Clingman said in the press release.

Finally, Molly Maassen will serve as Helias' head boys tennis coach, along with continuing to lead the girls tennis program. Maassen will replace Margaret Shimkus as the leader of the boys tennis team after Shimkus announced she is stepping down from the position. Shimkus led Helias Boys Tennis to five district titles and a second place finish in the Class 2 MSHSAA State Tournament in 2023 during her career.

“We’re grateful for Coach Maassen’s talent and commitment to Crusader athletics and excited to see her build on Coach Shimkus’ legacy and the solid program she has maintained,” Clingman said in the press release.
