Stephens College wins crosstown showdown with Columbia College

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Stephens College opened up AMC play with a 77-66 victory over Columbia College in a crosstown clash at Silverthorne Arena. The Stars' overall record is now 6-4 after this victory on Sunday afternoon.

Stephens College started the game with an 11-2 scoring run to build a quick nine-point lead over Columbia College in the first five minutes of the contest. However, the Cougars responded with a 7-2 scoring run of their own to cut its deficit to 13-9 in the opening quarter.

The Stars started to pull away in the second quarter, taking a 38-25 into halftime after Marveen Ross hit a three-pointer with 30 seconds left before the break.

Columbia College started to rally in the third quarter, cutting the Stars' lead to 50-47 after Allison Stiers drained a triple with 1:18 left until the final quarter. Stephens College responded with a 9-0 scoring run, capped off by a layup from Savanna Crockett, to hold on for an 11-point victory.

Crockett was the game's leading scorer and posted a double-double, recording 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Zaraya March chipped in 14 points for the Stars.

Mallory Shetley scored a team-high 18 points for Columbia College. DeLaney Horstman was right behind Shetley in scoring with 17 points while also recording nine rebounds.

Columbia College is now 3-1 in AMC play after Sunday's loss with a matchup against University of Saint Mary coming up on Dec. 30. Stephens College has a 1-0 conference record and hosts William Woods in another AMC game on Wednesday, Dec. 13.
