William Woods hosts first-ever home football game, falls to Saint Ambrose

College football is now a staple on the campus of William Woods University. In Week 3 of its inaugural season, William Woods Football hosted an opponent on its home turf for the first time in its young program's history.
However, the Owls are still seeking their first-ever team win. Saint Ambrose spoiled William Woods' home opener, defeating Julian Mendez's squad 52-13 on Saturday night.
The Fighting Bees held the Owls scoreless throughout the first half and posted 52 unanswered points following the opening kick. Saint Ambrose was led by starting quarterback Tomele Staples, who finished 11-for-20 with 180 passing yards and four touchdowns. Maximo Vasquez and Kaden King combined to rush for 179 yards on 29 carries and scored three total touchdowns.
The first two touchdowns scored by William Woods on their new field both belong to Troy Oliver. The junior wide receiver ended the contest with 14 catches for 245 receiving yards, along with his two trips to the end zone. William Woods quarterback Gabe Serri completed 23 of his 55 passes for 348 yards and two passing touchdowns.
Up next - William Woods will meet Westminster College for a crosstown showdown in Fulton. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m.
