No. 14 Mizzou softball falls short of sweeping No. 18 Mississippi State
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Game three seems to be the problem for No. 14 Mizzou softball in 2024.
Once again, head coach Larissa Anderson and company had No. 18 Mississippi State right where they wanted them. The Tigers won two-straight to clinch the series win on Saturday and Sunday, however, on Monday night the Bulldogs mounted a late comeback to avoid getting swept in Columbia, 3-2.
MU has still not swept an SEC team in 2024 and, interestingly, has not won a game three in any of the series that they have won in conference action.
Coach Anderson highlighted one big problem in the game three loss to the Bulldogs: hitting. Her lineup only mustered three hits in the loss, which she pointed out puts a lot of pressure on her pitchers.
Despite the result, senior Laurin Krings tossed a nice game in her second start against Mississippi State. She went 6.2 innings and fanned six batters, allowing just two runs on five hits.
Mizzou carried a two-run lead, courtesy of some clutch hitting from seniors Jenna Laird and Alex Honnold, into the seventh inning. But, the Bulldogs came up with some heroics in the final frame to take a 3-2 lead, which secured the win.
Even with the loss Mizzou is still 37-14 overall in 2024 and 10-11 in SEC action, which puts the team in good footing for postseason action, as they will close out the season on a road trip over the weekend.
Up next - the Tigers will travel to Columbia, South Carolina for the regular season finale. First pitch in game one of the series between MU and the Gamecocks will be at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 3.
