Mizzou baseball beats Missouri State in first of two meetings

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Mizzou baseball team just needs to win one more game over Missouri State on Tuesday, April 23 to complete the two-game season sweep over the Bears, after the Tigers captured game one 6-2 on Tuesday night.

MU got out to an early lead at Hammon Field, courtesy of back-to-back two-run innings in the first and second. In those frames, the freshmen stood out. Kaden Peer plated the first run of the game in the opening inning with a single to center field. Then, in the second, freshman Mateo Serna hit a home run to left center to make it a 4-0 Tiger lead.

The Bears managed to plate a couple of runs over the course of nine innings, but first year skipper Kerrick Jackson's group kept MO State at an arm's length.

Six Tigers tallied a hit against Missouri State on Tuesday. Sophomore Jackson Lovich led the charge, going 3-for-5 and launching a two-out solo home run in the seventh. He co-led the team, along with Serna, with two RBI.

On the hill, Jacob Peaden earned the win for Mizzou, after coming in in relief for starter Daniel Wissler. Peadan threw for 0.2 innings and struck out one batter, while not allowing any runs on one hit.

Overall, Wissler had a solid outing, though. He went for 4.1 winnings and allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out four batters.

Ian Lohse earned his first save of the year, as he finished off the midweek win with a punchout.

Up next - Mizzou will return home to host LSU at Taylor Stadium. Game one in the three-game series is set for 7 p.m. on Friday. April 19.
