World swim body wins antitrust court case against athletes

GENEVA (AP) — A Californian court has ruled in favor of swimming’s governing body in antitrust cases filed in 2018 by athletes and a rival independently run competition. World Aquatics says it won rulings from a judge in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco. The issues in court once shaped as a possible landmark for athlete activism against Olympic sports bodies. Cases were filed by champion swimmers Katinka Hosszú, Tom Shields and Michael Andrew plus and a separate but linked challenge by the independent International Swimming League. It eventually launched in 2019 promising more prize money for competing in more broadcast-friendly events.
