ESPN carefully navigated coverage of Hamlin collapse

ESPN initially showed a replay a couple of times of Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsing to the turf during the first quarter of Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals before going to a commercial. It was not shown again on the network. The restraint demonstrated how TV coverage of severe injuries during sporting events has evolved. Many still remember the constant replays of Washington quarterback Joe Theismann suffering a compound fracture to his right leg while being sacked by New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor on a Monday night game in 1985.
