Mizzou women’s basketball cleaning up mistakes for packed slate

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

After securing a thrilling, come-from-behind win in the season opener against Howard, head coach Kellie Harper and company are preparing for a busy week of non-conference opponents.

The Tigers will play four opponents in the next 11 days, starting with a road trip to face Arkansas-Little Rock.

"We're not going to overhaul things, but I think after every game we evaluate where our team is," coach Harper said. "Offensively, we'll work really hard on our spacing, I think that cleans up a lot of things. Defensively, just a little bit more execution."

When watching back the film from the team's win, there was much coach Harper was hoping to correct despite the final result. The Tigers' grit and determination fueled the comeback in the opener, but they will need to do more to find consistent success.

"I knew there were so many mistakes early on, however I felt like a lot of those are correctable mistakes that our players will be able to see," Harper said. "As a coach, it was really rewarding that the reason we won was how we've been defining this team. We've been talking about their grit, their toughness, and that is the only reason we won the game."

Many of those easily fixable mistakes come from purely playing together more. With just four returners on this team Mizzou has relied on a new group to learn how they play with each other, and as time progresses, that can only get better.

"I think a lot of our mistakes are just offensive and defensive chemistry," Harper said. "It's not that they don't want to play together or that they don't communicate. It's understanding the system, trusting the system, and trusting one another to do our jobs, and a lot of that just comes with experience together."

Up Next - Mizzou will travel to face Arkansas-Little Rock. Tip off against the Trojans is set for 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6.
