Mizzou soccer shuts out Northern Illinois

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Tigers returned to the win column with a statement shutout win over Northern Illinois, 4-0.

As Mizzou approaches the end of its non-conference schedule, head coach Stefanie Golan and was looking to get back on track with a big win against the Huskies. The Tigers had been shut out in their previous two games and hoped to get back on track with just three games before SEC play.

That newly found fire was evident from the first touch of the game. Mizzou came out on full attack, with Emily Derucki taking a shot on goal within the first minute. The team continued the pressure until they earned a corner kick in the 13th minute, and a second one in the 21st.

On that second set piece attempt, senior Landis Canada managed to get her foot on the ball and slot one past the goalie for the first score of the game. That goal ended a streak of more than 230 consecutive minutes without finding the back of the net.

Mizzou continued that pressure through the first half, recording eight shots in the first 45 minutes. Coming out of the break, the Tigers followed the same pattern. Freshman Lana Adams managed to double the lead in the 67th minute, and just 77 seconds later, Canada found the back of the net once again for her second of the night to make it 3-0.

However, after being shut out for three of their first four games, the Tigers were in no mood to slow that roll. Petra Bandula added a fourth on an assist from Landry Hopkins, finally putting some of the team's offensive woes to bed.

In total, Mizzou finished with 15 shots and eight on goal. Riley Wilkerson recorded four saves of her own on the night, while keeping that clean sheet.

Up Next - Mizzou will travel to face Creighton for the penultimate non-conference game. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30.
