Capital City soccer falls in state semifinal action, will play for third place in Class 3

FENTON, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Capital City girls soccer team fell short in semifinal action against St. Michael the Archangel (SMA), on Friday afternoon, losing 6-0 to the Guardians. The Cavaliers will now play for third place in Class 3, on Saturday.

But, no matter what the finish may be, this group of Lady Cavs have already managed to make history. Before they even stepped on the pitch at World Wide Technology Soccer Park, head coach Kelsey Hile and her squad had already put themselves into the history books, making their first appearance in the Final Four in program history.

The Cavaliers got off to a solid start, as goalkeeper Ryann Flower tallied 11 saves on the day, keeping it to just a one-goal deficit for her team for much of the first half. However, a made penalty kick from the Garudians' Addi Basler with less than 10 minutes in the first half is when St. Michael the Archangel really started to get some separation.

After halftime, the Guardians came out swinging. About 10 minutes into the final 40 minutes, Harper Burdick buried a ball into the back of the net to kickstart a four-goal half for SMA.

St. Michael the Archangel's six goals each came from different players, as the Guardians will now advance to the Class 3 State Championship. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers will face Fort Zumwalt South with a third place trophy on the line, on Saturday.

Up next - Capital City will finish out the season on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. at World Wide Technology Park in Fenton, Mo. No matter how the season ends, the Lady Cavs have already secured the best finish in program history.
