Helias Crusaders top class five on final day of MSHSAA track and field championships
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
13 mid-Missouri athletes were crowned champions, and three teams brought home hardware on day four of the state track and field championships.
The day started with a second local high school taking a title in the 4x800 meters, with Tolton winning by nearly two full seconds. The only other relay from the area to bring home a gold medal was the penultimate race, with the Capital City Cavaliers winning the class four section of the girls 4x400.
Between those relays, three individuals picked up gold medals on the track. Helias' Nicki Frank and Isla Alfultis placed first and second in the 300 meter hurdles, netting 18 crucial points in the team race for the Crusaders.
In the 800, mid-Missouri dominated, bringing home two first place trophies from the four sections of competition. Rock Bridge's Brennan Scott and Tolton's Angelina Cottone both picked up a second gold medal after helping their team's to the top step in the 4x800.
Two more athletes were crowned in the field events. Battle's Xavier Wandrey flew higher than the rest in the class five boys' high jump, clearing his final bar at six feet, nine inches. Helias' Megan Bruce won the girls' class five shot put on the very last throw of the competition, and secured the 10 points the Crusaders needed to top Liberty in the team race.
Helias won the class five girls championship with 84.5 points, edging out the Blue Jays by a mere 3.5 points. Jefferson City's boys tied for second in the class four team race, with Tolton's girls earning a bronze trophy in the girls section of the same class.
