McDevitt’s heroics on the mound not enough as Mizzou falls to South Carolina

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Tigers fell short in game one of the series against the Gamecocks, 5-1, despite a stellar night pitching.

Josh McDevitt was tasked with opening the weekend on the mound for Mizzou, and he was hot from the very first pitch he threw. The righty sat down two Gamecocks in the first inning, and another in the third to hold them off of the scoresheet.

That shutout would eventually come to an end in the third, when Patrick Evans crushed a two-run homer to left center field and put the visitors in the drivers seat. McDevitt responded though, striking out three of the five batters that followed, keeping the Tigers in striking distance.

Pierre Seals capitalized on the opportunity in the bottom of the fourth, when the hit a beautifully placed ball to right field that rolled all the way to the corner, starting the frame off with his first triple of the season. Jase Woita managed to bring him home with a fielders choice grounder to second to make it a 2-1 game.

From there, Mizzou slowed on both the defensive and offensive ends. A pair of errors in the sixth allowed two more runs to come across for South Carolina, and a wild pitch in the eighth brough home the fifth and final run of the game.

Josh McDevitt ended the day after seven innings of work, where he allowed just five hits and three earned runs while picking up eight strikeouts. Pierre Seals finished the day 2-4 from the plate, and was the only Tiger to notch a hit all night.

Up Next - Mizzou is set for a rematch against the Gamecocks with a chance to level the series. First pitch for game two is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday, April 10.
