Mizzou women’s hoops wallops Texas A&M for second SEC win
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Mizzou women's basketball team snapped its two-game losing streak, on Sunday night, taking down Texas A&M in a 81-70 victory in Columbia.
The victory marked first-year head coach Kellie Harper's second Southeastern Conference win of the year, lifting her team to 14-9 overall and 2-6 in league play.
Coach Harper's team hit the ground running on a snowy day in Columbia, setting the tone in the first quarter by out-scoring the Aggies 21-9. Over the course of the next couple of quarters, the Tigers never let their foot off the gas. Mizzou turned its best shooting performance since their last SEC win over Arkansas, three games ago, shooting at a 47.9 percent clip from the field and 41.2 percent from 3-point range.
For the third-straight game, junior guard Grace Slaughter led her Tigers in scoring, tallying 24 points, along with four boards and an assist. Redshirt senior guard Jayla Smith (15), sophomore guard Chloe Sotell (11), junior guard Abbey Schreacke (10) and senior forward Jordana Reisma (10) also all joined Slaughter in the double-digit points club.
Things did get interesting in the fourth quarter, when Mizzou went on ice cold in the shooting department, not scoring a field goal for about six minutes. During that time, Texas A&M went on an 11-0 run to get within 11 points of MU, after trailing by as many as 22 points, at the start of the fourth.
Despite that late run, Coach Harper's team managed to finish the job.
Up next - Mizzou will get a week off, before hitting the road to meet Mississippi State at Humphrey Coliseum on Sunday, Feb. 1.
