Lawrence’s fourth quarter heroics lifts Jaguars over Chiefs for first time since 2009

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (KMIZ)
The Kansas City Chiefs' early-season struggles continued on a national stage, on Monday night. Head coach Andy Reid and company fell in a thriller down in Jacksonville, as the Jaguars topped the Chiefs 31-28 for their first win over KC since 2009.
With the loss, the Chiefs fell to 2-3 on the season. Head coach Andy Reid and company sit in third place in the AFC West, just ahead of the 1-2 Las Vegas Raiders.
KC's loss came at the hands of Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who had a Patrick Mahomes-level clutch performance in the final minute of Monday's game. Down 28-24 with about 30 seconds left, the former Clemson star ran in the game-winning touchdown from one-yard. However, that play started out with disaster, though, as one of his offensive linemen stepped on his foot and tripped him up out of the gates. Unfazed, Lawrence got up, stumbled again and still ran in for the touchdown on his 26th birthday.
Lawrence finished with a team-high 54 yards and a pair of scores on the ground, as well as 221 yards and one touchdown through the air. Those stats helped balance out the two turnovers he tallied in the win, losing a fumble and throwing an interception.
Despite the loss, Mahomes kept his team in it. He completed 70 percent of his passes for 318 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 60 yards and one score. However, he also finished the night with one, costly turnover, as he threw a 99-yard pick six to give the Jaguars their first lead in the the third quarter.
Running back Kareem Hunt and tight end Travis Kelce also got into the end zone for Kansas City. Kelce caught the first score of the game, while Hunt ran it in for six twice in the loss in Duval County.
Defensively, Mizzou alum Nick Bolton led the charge with a team-best 12 total tackles, as well as one tackle for loss and a pass defended. He also forced a critical fumble at the goal line in the first half, which later result in a KC touchdown.
Up next - Kansas City will look to right the ship in another primetime matchup. The Chiefs will host the Detroit Lions for Sunday Night Football on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 7:20 p.m.
