Mizzou women’s basketball renews rivalry with Kansas

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Four seasons after one of the fiercest rivalries in college basketball returned to the hardwood on the men's side, it is being renewed for the women, as well.

On Tuesday, Mizzou Athletics announced that Mizzou women's hoops will face rival Kansas at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City on Saturday, November 15. It will mark the first time the Tigers and Jayhawks have meet in a regular-season game since 2012.

"This is one of the fiercest rivalries college athletics has to offer," first-year head coach Kellie Harper said in a press release. "It is important to keep traditions alive in the changing landscape of collegiate sports. I understand what this game means to our fans and I am excited to be on the sideline for my first Border War."

In a series that dates back to 1974, the Jayhawks hold the all-time advantage over MU, 39-43. Kansas won four of the final six regular season meetings between the two programs, dating from 2010 to 2012. However, the last time the two rivals met in the regular-season, Mizzou get the last laugh with a 70-65 win in Lawrence.

Mizzou and Kansas actually have met pretty recently in the WNIT during the 2022-23 campaign, though. The Jayhawks ended the Tigers' season with a dominant 75-47 win in that postseason battle.

Coach Harper has quite a slate in her debut season. In addition to diving head-first into one of the biggest rivalries in college sports, she will also make her first return to her alma mater in the 2025-26 season. Harper coached the Volunteers for multiple seasons, before being let go following a run to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in the 2023-24 campaign.
