Mizzou baseball’s season comes to a close in first round of SEC Tournament

HOOVER, Ala. (KMIZ)
The Mizzou baseball team put one of the worst seasons in program history in the books, on Tuesday morning, with a 4-1 loss to Alabama in the first round of the SEC Tournament.
With that loss, skipper Kerrick Jackson and company end the year with a 16-39 overall record and the worst conference mark in the history of the modern SEC era, since shifting to a 30-game slate in 1996, going 3-28 against league opponents.
MU had one last chance to extend its season, on Tuesday, in the program's first SEC Tournament appearance since 2021. In years past, the bottom two teams in the conference would miss out on postseason play, but 2025 marked the first year that every program made the cut to play in Hoover, Alabama.
Pitcher Sam Horn got the start for No. 16-seeded Mizzou against the Crimson Tide and threw a shutout through three innings. He struck out two batters and didn't allow any runs, scattering two hits. However, things changed once the right-hander left the game.
Blair Oaks alum Wil Libbert finished out the remaining five innings for Coach Jackson. He ended up getting handed the loss to finish at 3-4 in the 2025 campaign. Libbert allowed four earned runs on six hits, while striking out a pair of Alabama batters.
The pitching staff didn't have much run support, either. The Tigers managed to take the first lead of the game, courtesy of Mateo Serna's eighth home run of the season. But, that marked the end of any production at the plate for MU.
The Tigers had one more opportunity to make some noise in the ninth inning, as the the group managed to load up the bases. Mizzou couldn't capitalize, though, as a couple of fly outs from Cayden Nicoletto and Serna ended the ball game. MU went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 12 runners on base.
Up next - Mizzou will prepare to turn things around in the 2026 season, which will mark year three for Coach Jackson.
