Mizzou falls to 0-16 in SEC play with series-opening loss to No. 16 Oklahoma

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Mizzou baseball team remains in the hunt for the group's elusive first SEC win of the season, following a 17-4 run-rule loss in the series opener against No. 16 Oklahoma, on Thursday night.

Skipper Kerrick Jackson and company are now 13-24 on the season and hold an 0-16 mark in conference play.

As has been the case many times throughout the 2025 campaign, MU didn't capitalize on the opportunity it created to win the game. After trailing by three runs through the first couple of innings, the Tigers began to dig themselves out that hole in the third thanks to a two-out RBI single from Jackson Lovich to make it a 3-1 ball game.

Lovich finished the game with his team-leading 14th multi-RBI performance of the season, going 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

Then, in the fourth inning, Mizzou called tie ball game. Catcher Jedier Hernandez lofted a long fly ball down the first base line and Oklahoma misplayed it, resulting in a two-run error.

However, the Sooners' 15-hit attack proved too much for the Tigers, as Oklahoma rebounded in the fifth inning. OU used a leadoff single and steal of second by Dawson Willis to spark the go-ahead rally. St. Elizabeth alum Brock Lucas retired a couple of batters for the first two outs of the inning, but Easton Carmichael lined one of Lucas' pitches in left field to plate the run, which would end up being the eventual game-winner.

Oklahoma then proceeded to pile on five runs in the sixth inning. The group used Trey Gambill's second home run of the night and a two-run double by Drew Dickerson to stretch the lead to 9-3.

Despite the result, freshman left-hander Brady Kehlenbrink proved to be a real positive for the Tigers. He limited the Sooners to three runs on three hits over the course of his career-best 4.0 inning start.

Things began to go downhill when Kehlenbrink's relief hit the mound. Lucas proceeded to six earned runs on seven hits go in jut 1.1 innings of work, which resulted in him getting charged with the loss.

Seth McCartney and Ben Smith each gave up four earned runs in relief, as well.

Up next - Mizzou will play in a twin bill against Oklahoma, on Friday, due to inclement weather expected the rest of the weekend. Doubleheader action will begin at 12 p.m. at Taylor Stadium.
