COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Mizzou men's basketball is getting in on a trend that's growing more and more in popularity across college sports: hiring a general manager.

The University posted a job listing, seeking a general manager for the men's basketball team. The posting said that Mizzou is looking for someone with previous experience working in Division I men's basketball. The hire will report directly to head coach Dennis Gates.

You can find a full list of the responsibilities for the Tigers' general manager, as listed by the job posting, below.

  • Overseeing talent acquisition to enhance cohesiveness of the team.
  • Managing the player personnel aspects of the program, such as recruiting talent, roster management and NIL opportunities.
  • Supporting the administrative functions such as budget supervision, team traveling and scheduling.
  • Monitoring the progress of overall success, determined by team created metrics.
  • Assisting with various program related items as needed.
  • Adhering to NCAA, SEC and University regulations.
  • Other tasks assigned by the head coach or sports administrator.

The trend of hiring a general manager is growing in college sports, as the Duke men's basketball team was one of the first programs to hire a GM in 2022. Since then, quite a few universities have gotten in on the action, including Texas, Florida, Wake Forest, Syracuse, North Carolina, Cal, Wyoming and others.

Athletic departments across the nation are even turning to some of their most famous alumni to fill those roles. In March, NBA star Stephen Curry accepted the assistant general manager role at Davidson, which is his alma mater. Former ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski is the general manager at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure University, as well.

Hiring a general manager is also a growing trend in college football. During the 2024 season, former Colts quarterback Andrew Luck accepted the general manager position at his old school, Stanford.

On the Mizzou football side, head coach Eli Drinkwitz said, in a press conference in April, that his program was not looking into hiring a general manager at this point.

"I don't even know if we have a structure in place. Honestly, I haven't made any of those decisions yet. That would be a conversation Laird [Veatch] and I would have to have because at some places the GM is firing the head coach, so I don't necessarily know if I want to hire someone that can fire me," Coach Drink joked.

The ABC 17 sports team will keep you updated on any new developments in Mizzou's search of a men's basketball general manager.
