COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Mizzou men's basketball coach Dennis Gates now has two positions to fill on his coaching staff this offseason.

On Tuesday morning, Tiger hoops announced that associate head coach Charlton 'C.Y' Young will be taking the same job at the University of Miami, after three seasons in Columbia. C.Y. came to Mizzou when Coach Gates first got hired, however, now he will return to the state where he grew up and spent much of his coaching career.

In his time with the Tigers, Coach C.Y. helped put together a couple of memorable seasons. In the coaching staff's debut year, he helped Mizzou to a 25-10 record, which was the program's most win in 11 seasons, and a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Then, following a tough 2023-24 campaign, he helped Coach Gates bounce back from that winless conference season and end up with a 22-12 overall record this past year, while the team earned a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

With Young on staff at Mizzou, two Tigers went on to the NBA. C.Y. helped with the development of first round draft pick Kobe Brown, who was selected by the Los Angeles Clippers, as well as D'Moi Hodge, who signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. In total, five Mizzou players have signed with the NBA or a G-League Franchise with Coach Young on staff.

He'll be headed to his hometown of Miami with about 30 years of coaching experience under his belt, as he came to Columbia directly following a nine-year stint on head coach Leonard Hamilton's Florida State staff from 2013-2022. In his time there, he played a role in the Seminoles winning an ACC regular-season championship, making three Sweet Sixteen appearances and the program's first Elite Eight in 25 years.

C.Y. has made stops all over the country. He was a head coach at his alma mater, Georgia Southern, for a few seasons, but has made quite a few stops as an assistant, as he's worked at Auburn, Jacksonville, Northeastern, UT Chattanooga and Georgia Tech.

Coach Gates will now look to fill two major roles on his coaching staff with the departure of Young, as well as former offensive coordinator Rob Summers, who took the head coaching job at Cleveland State this offseason.
