No. 24 Mizzou wrestling overcomes injuries to grab win over Utah Valley

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

No. 24 Mizzou gymnastics picked up its first home dual win of the season, on Friday night, with an 18-16 victory over Utah Valley. Head coach Brian Smith's squad managed to win six out of 10 matches against the Wolverines for their second conference win of the 2024-25 season.

The Tigers took to the mats without some key contributors, once again, as Smith's team has battled injury all season long. Noah Surtin medically retired from the sport before the season began. Four-time All-American Rocky Elam is out for the season with an injury. Two-time national champion Keegan O'Toole is missing the entire month of January due to injury and Colton Hawks is week-to-week with an injury, missing Friday night's dual.

Despite all of that, the younger talent stepped up for Coach Smith.

True freshman Gage Walker opened up the match with a win by decision at 125 pounds. Fellow freshman Jake Crapps followed up that performance with another victory at 133 pounds.

No. 17 Josh Edmond kept the momentum rolling in the direction of the Tigers with a nice upset win in the only ranked matchup of the night. Edmond took down No. 13 Haiden Drury, 7-5. After his win, Zeke Seltzer secured the fourth-straight win of the night in the 149-pound bout.

The Wolverines countered with four-straight victories in the middle of the match. That run gave Utah Valley a one-point lead heading into the final bout. However, Jarrett Stoner closed the door on the competition with a big 5-1 decision win to put three points up on the board and clinch the dual for Smith and company.

Up next - Arizona State will come to town on Wednesday, Jan. 22 for Mizzou's second of six-straight Big 12 matches to end the regular season. The first bout is set to begin at 6:30 p.m.

Missouri welcomes Arizona State to Hearnes Center on Wednesday, Jan. 22, for its second of six-straight Big 12 matches to end the regular season. The first bout is set for 6:30 p.m. CT, and can be streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.
