Mizzou linebacker earns SEC weekly honors following win over Oklahoma

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Following a standout effort in the win against Oklahoma on Saturday, Mizzou linebacker Triston Newson was tabbed as the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, on Monday.

It is the first time that the Mississippi-native has ever earned a conference nod in a Tiger uniform. For the Tigers, its the team's third weekly honor of the season, as both kicker Blake Craig and running back Nate Noel made a weekly list in September.

In the 30-23 win over Oklahoma, Newson ended up with season-high 10 total tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss, as well as one sack and one forced fumble, which ended up being returned by his teammate, defensive end Zion Young, for the game-winning touchdown.

Over the course of his career, Newson has now been credited with 254 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and eight forced fumbles.

The Tiger standout will share the Defensive Player of the Week honor with Ole Miss' Jared Ivey, who finished with seven tackles, two sacks, two pass deflections and a forced fumble in the Rebels' win over Georgia.

Up next - Newson and Mizzou will head to Columbia, South Carolina to face off with the Gamecocks at. Williams-Brice Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 3:15 p.m. CT.
