Mizzou women’s hoops falls to 1-2 with tight loss to Norfolk State
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Mizzou women's basketball team fell just short in its attempt for a comeback win against Norfolk State, on Sunday, as the Tigers dropped to 1-2 on the season with a 57-54 loss.
Head coach Robin Pingeton and company trailed for the majority of the game but managed to come up with one last surge in the fourth quarter. The Tigers were up by five points with about eight minutes left in the game, but could not string together enough defensive stops to capture a win.
MU was out-rebounded and out-shot in Sunday's loss, as only two Tigers got into double digit scoring.
Guard Abbey Schreacke and forward Angelique Ngalakulondi led the charge, with 15 and 14 points, respectively. As a team, Mizzou shot about 38 percent from the field and 46 percent from 3-point range. Notably, the two players who have made the biggest impact in this young season, guards Grace Slaughter and Ashton Judd, were held to just 12 combined points through four quarters.
On the other end of the court, three players from Norfolk State gave Pingeton and company some trouble. Spartan standouts Diamond Johnson, Niya Fields and Kierra Wheeler each totaled 14 points or more, with Johnson having the game-high 17 points.
Mizzou did manage to get its turnover numbers down below 20, which had been an area of emphasis through the first two games. However, new problems arose, as the group allowed six fast break points, seven second chance points and 12 steals in the loss.
Up next - Pingeton and company will continue their homestand with a game against Tulane on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6 p.m.
