Mizzou holds off Howard at home, ends 20-game losing streak
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Tigers are finally back in the win column.
A strong first half on Friday night led to Missouri to its first win of the season. The 77-62 victory over the Howard Bison at Mizzou Arena snapped the Tigers’ abysmal 20-game losing streak.
The Tigers (1-1) opened the game with an 8-0 run and the lead never wavered. Missouri held a 40-28 advantage at halftime. The game became a bit closer in the second half than many fans may have expected.
Howard (0-2) trailed by as many as 14 points with 11 minutes, 33 seconds remaining in the game, but reduced Missouri’s lead to 63-59 over the next eight minutes.
The Bison took advantage of a number of miscues by the Tigers during that stretch, which included six missed shots (four from beyond the arc) and three turnovers. But the Missouri kept Howard to scoring just three points the rest of the way.
The Tigers overcame poor 3-point shooting (three-of-22) in the win.
Senior guard Tamar Bates paced the Tigers with a game-high 17 points, while junior guard Mark Mitchell totaled 16 and sophomore guard Anthony Robinson II put up 13. Missouri went 47% (24-of-51) from the field.
Senior Marcus Dockery led Howard with 14 points, while senior guard Bryce Harris had 11 as the Bison shot 40% (22-of-55).
