Chiefs top Buccaneers in walk off fashion, improve to 8-0
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Kansas City Chiefs kept fans on the edge of their seats on Monday night, but the team did manage to preserve its undefeated record with a 30-24, walk off win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With the victory, KC improved to 8-0 in 2024.
Head coach Andy Reid's team is the only unbeaten team in the league, as the Chiefs have not lost since Dec. 25, 2023. KC is just the sixth Super Bowl champion to start the following season 8-0.
Kansas City's undefeated record has not come easy. The team has dealt with a multitude of injuries and tough games, but have always found a way to win. Monday night's win against the Buccaneers was no different.
The Chiefs trailed at multiple points in the game, but managed to take a 24-17 lead in the fourth quarter, courtesy of a Patrick Mahomes touchdown pass to receiver DeAndre Hopkins.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield and Tampa Bay had one last punch in them, though. The Buccaneers put together a 10-play, 71-yard drive in the final two minutes of the game to send it overtime at Arrowhead Stadium.
One more possession was all Mahomes and company needed. The Chiefs went 70 yards in about six minutes and sent running back Kareem Hunt into the end zone to win the game in walk-off fashion, 30-24.
The win marked, arguably, the best performance of Mahomes' 2024 season, so far. The quarterback threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns, on Monday. It was also the first game of the season that he did not throw an interception.
In his first game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, Hopkins showed Chiefs fans what he's all about. He got in for two touchdowns, as he caught eight passes for 86 yards. However, Mahomes spread the wealth in the passing game, as tight end Travis Kelce recorded his first 100-yard game of 2024, leading all receivers with 14 catches.
Up next - Kansas City will stay home to face the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Nov. 10. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m.
