Chiefs survive another one-score game to remain undefeated

KMIZ

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (KMIZ)

It wasn't pretty, but a win is a win.

The Kansas City Chiefs remained one of the few unbeaten teams in the NFL, on Sunday, with a 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

For the fourth-straight game, KC worked with an early deficit. The Chargers put the Chiefs in a 10-0 hole, courtesy of a Justin Herbert touchdown pass to Ladd McConkey and a Cameron Dicker 50-yard field goal in the first quarter.

With just minutes before halftime, Patrick Mahomes and his offense showed some signs of life. Mahomes lifted up a 54-yard bomb to rookie Xavier Worthy for a touchdown to make it a 10-7 ball game, headed into the locker room. That touchdown pass traveled 62.2 yards through the air, which is Mahomes' longest completion by air distance of his career.

The Kansas City defense stood tall after halftime, not allowing any points in the third or fourth quarter.

Mahomes and company managed to tie the game at 10 in the third quarter, with a 37-yard field goal off the foot of Harrison Butker.

In crunch time, with about six minutes left to play, head coach Andy Reid dialed up a five-play, 60-yard drive, which ended with running back Samaje Perine hitting end zone and securing the victory.

Mahomes completed 65 percent of his passes, on Sunday, throwing for 245 yards, one touchdown, as well as one interception. The quarterback has thrown an interception in every game this season, including two against the Bengals in Week 3.

All the talk leading up to the game against the Chargers surrounded future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce. The KC star had a lackluster start to the season, but silenced some of the doubters, on Sunday. He was the team's leading receiver catching seven passes for 89 yards.

It's also important to note that Kansas City's leading receiver, so far, in 2024 has been Rashee Rice. He came out of the game in the first half, after taking a big blow to the knee. During the CBS broadcast, Coach Reid told sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson that he didn't have any specific updates on Rice's condition, but did say that it is not good.

The Kansas City defense was the star of the game, once again. Drue Tranquill finished with a team-high 10 tackles and one tackle for loss against his former team. Meanwhile, defensive tackle Chris Jones recorded two sacks on Herbert in the win.

Up next - the 4-0 Chiefs will return to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium to host the Saints on Monday Night Football. Kickoff between Kansas City and New Orleans is set for 7:15 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7.
