ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)

The St. Louis offense did not have enough gas in the tank keep up with a big outing from Seattle, on Sunday, as the Mariners beat the Cardinal 10-4 in the series rubber match.

Pitcher Miles Mikolas got the start on the hill for the Red Birds and it was a rough one. He got his team into a whole early into Sunday's game. Seattle scored seven unanswered runs in the first two innings of action at Busch Stadium. As a result, Mikolas only lasted those two innings, giving up six earned runs on nine hits. He dropped to 8-11 on the season with the loss.

The Cardinal bats did manage to respond in the home half of the second inning, when Jose Fermin knocked an RBI single into center field to plate both Nolan Arenado and Ivan Herrera. Even with those runs, STL still had a five-run deficit to overcome.

The deficit grew larger in the fifth inning, when Seattle's Jorge Polanco hit a 419-foot two-run home run to make it a 9-2 ball game.

Skipper Oli Marmol's group managed to respond one more time, with a Jordan Walker RBI double to bring home two more runs. However, it was not nearly enough to overcome the firepower the Mariners brought to the plate.

The cherry on top of the win for Seattle was that two of those seven runs that were scored in the first two innings came off the bat of former Cardinal Randy Arozarena. He hit a two-run homer off of Mikolas in the second to put his team up by seven. It was the first time that Arozarena had hit a home run off of his former team.

With the loss, St. Louis dropped to 72-71 on the season.

Up next - the Cardinals will stay home to host the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday, Sept. 10. First pitch iss slated for 6:45 pm.
