Chiefs offense works to become a dominant force in 2024

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (KMIZ)

If you take a look back at the entire season leading up to Kansas City's Super Bowl LVIII victory, it makes the win even more impressive.

Time and time again the Chiefs' defense took the spotlight in 2023, as quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the offense struggled to find its usual rhythm. The unit ended with a Lombardi Trophy, yes, but also ended up ninth in the league in yards per game and 15th in points per game. Those stats are definitely not the worst out of 32 NFL teams, but it wasn't up to KC's standards, again, making Super Bowl LVIII even more impressive.

"When we had to make plays at the end of the Super Bowl, we had to win on offense, we did it," offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said. "I think being able to get through some of the challenges we went through and still win it creates fire and burn for this year to better on offense and help the team out, in general."

As a result, in 2024, Kansas City will look to play more complimentary football.

Over the course of the offseason General Manager Brett Veach and company fed the offense's hunger for dominance with speed...and a lot of it. The additions of first-round draft pick Xavier Worthy and former Arizona Cardinals standout Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown may just give the Chiefs the fastest wide receiver corps in the league.

Worthy broke the record for the fastest 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine and will look to make an immediate impact on his first NFL roster. However, Brown is coming in with all the experience.

"This offense right now, for him, it's not been too much for him and we put a lot in, so he's kept his play speed," Nagy said.

Brown stayed humble when asked about Nagy's compliment and said that being up the speed right off the jump is just a part of his job.

"If I can come in and I can be on top of things and I just got here...it pushes everyone else, you know, to be better and raise the competition in the room," Brown said.

Mahomes will have some new weapons to mix in with his tried and true ones in 2024. Nagy actually says that QB1 is the driving force behind this team's desire to take it up another level, after winning their third Super Bowl in five years.

"I think, you know, he looks at it like every year is a challenge," Nagy said. "There's always some type of edge that we and he creates and I think internally for him the biggest thing now is being able to be more efficient probably as a unit, on offense."

Nagy will look to help Mahomes put the pieces of the offensive puzzle together in the remaining weeks of training camp, as the Chiefs will look to be the first team in NFL history to win three-straight Super Bowls.

"I been with Kelce a long time, I been with Pat a long time. Some of these young guys that come in - I want to be able to be great to them and help them exceed as players and then us as a unit, like, how can I be the best leader for them," Nagy said.

Head coach Andy Reid said that padded practices will begin on Friday, following Thursday's day off, so that is when the offense will really begin to take shape.
