BOSTON, Mass. (KMIZ)

The Kansas City Royals couldn't get back in the win column before the MLB All-Star Break commenced. On Sunday, the Boston Red Sox topped KC 5-4 in the series rubber match. The Kansas City loss dropped the club to 52-45.

Despite a much more rough ending to the first half of 2024, the Royals are still hanging around in the American League Central. KC is in third places and sits 7.0 games back from the first-place Cleveland Guardians.

After going 35-24 through the first few months of the season, skipper Matt Quatraro and company hit a rough patch in both June and July. June was by far the worst of it, as the group went 12-15. Halfway through the month of July, Kansas City is 5-5, but will have some work to do to get back into the AL Wild Card.

On Sunday, the Royals fell just short of ending the first half of the year in style. In the sixth inning, Salvador Perez made it a one-run game with a 426-foot home run over the Green Monster. However, the Red Sox kept KC at an arm's length, as Dominic Smith plated another Boston run in seventh to, eventually, lock up a win.

Brady Singer let up two early home runs in his start. All-in-all, he tossed 2.2 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. He is now 5-6 in 2024.

Up next - Kansas City will enjoy the MLB All-Star Break, before the season resumes on Friday, July 19. KC will open up the second half of the year against the Chicago White Sox. First pitch on Friday is set for 7:10 p.m.
