Lombardi trophies make a stop in Jefferson City amidst Chiefs, Royals stadium saga
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
Kansas City's back-to-back hardware made a stop in Jefferson City on Thursday afternoon. Gov. Mike Parson and a slew of Chiefs fans took pictures with the Lombardi trophies at the Missouri State Capitol.
The arrival of Kansas City's hardware comes as the border war between Missouri and Kansas is heating up. Over the course of the last few weeks, the sunflower state has approved a plan to make it more enticing for both the Chiefs and the Royals to make the move over the border, into Kansas.
The legislation, signed by Governor Laura Kelly, authorizes state bonds to help finance new facilities for both teams on the Kansas side. All-in-all it could help finance up to 70 percent of the cost of a new stadium for one or both of the teams.
On Thursday, Gov. Parson commented on the ongoing stadium saga.
"This is about competition, this is about a business deal and we're gonna make sure that we put the best business deal we can on the line to make sure that uh Arrowhead remains Arrowhead, here in the state of Missouri, and that the Royals continue with their future being here in Missouri," he said. "Look, I can't blame Kansas for trying what they're trying, you know. If I was probably sitting there, I'd be doing the same thing, but at the end of the day we're gonna be competitive."
The Chiefs' current lease runs up until 2031, so Gov. Parson said that the state of Missouri does have time to come up with a plan to keep the regining Super Bowl champions in the Show-Me state.
"We'll be meeting with people in the Kansas City region to try to be able to do what we can from a state's perspective to put something together," he said.
