Former Mizzou guard returns to join Dennis Gates’ coaching staff
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Mizzou men's basketball coach Dennis Gates will have a familiar face on the sidelines with him during the 2024-25 campaign, as ex-Tiger guard Tre Gomillion announced his homecoming on Wednesday.
Gomillion will serve as a coach on Gates' staff, after playing one year in the black and gold.
The Georgia native followed Gates from Cleveland State to Mizzou for the third-year head coach's debut season in Columbia. Gomillion was a team captain on the 2022-23 squad, appearing in 13 games. He, unfortunately, missed 11 of the season's final 16 games due to an injury. In the time he did get to play, he averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.9 steals in 17 minutes per game.
Coach Gates always referred to Gomillion as his 'coach on the floor' when he played at MU. On Wednesday, the Mizzou head coach took to social media and said, "My Day 1. Like I said back then, I will say it now! You will always be my family and I am honored to have you join the staff. You will be a very successful head coach! You have what it takes."
Gomillion was a consistent starter for Coach Gates at Cleveland State. During his senior year, he helped the Vikings to a regular-season Horizon League Championship, marking the first back-to-back conference tiles for CSU since 1998. He average a a career-best 10.5 points per game that season, while shooting 52.1 percent.
Gomillion and the Tigers will look to improve on an 0-18 finish in SEC action in the 2023-24 season during the upcoming 2024-25 campaign. Mizzou will tip off the season in Nov.
