ACC/SEC Challenge matchups announced for both Mizzou basketball teams
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Both the Mizzou men's and women's basketball teams found out their matchups for the 2024-25 ACC/SEC Challenge, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Tiger men's team will host head coach Dennis Gates' alma mater, California, on Tuesday, Dec. 3. MU has met Cal seven times in the program's history and leads the all-time series 5-2. The last meeting came in Nov. of 2011, when the Tigers dominated the Golden Bears 92-53.
Overall, the men's team owns a 7-4 record in conference challenge matchups, including an undefeated, 5-0, record when the game is played at Mizzou Arena. In last season's inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge, the Tigers beat Pitt 71-64 on the road.
Gates will welcome the program he played for from 1998 to 2002 in Dec. He was a three-time captain, who appeared in 114 career games, 34 of which he started in. He totaled 432 points, 140 rebounds, 148 assists and 100 steals. He was honored with the 2002 Pac-10 Medal of Honor as Cal's top graduating student-athlete. Gates helped his Golden Bears squad earn back-to-back bids to the NCAA Tournament in his junior and senior seasons.
The meeting between Cal and Mizzou is the first announced game of the 2024-25 campaign for Coach Gates and company.
Meanwhile, the women's team will host SMU in the ACC/SEC Challenge on Thursday, Dec. 5 at Mizzou Arena.
Head coach Robin Pingeton and company will be meeting the Mustangs in the program's first season in the ACC, after spending the last 11 years in the American Conference. SMU finished the 2023-24 season with a 14-16 overall record and an 8-10 mark in conference play.
The contest will appear on an ESPN affiliated network, with the official designation to be released at a later date.
