Renegades fall to Monarchs in non-league action
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Jefferson City Renegades dropped a non-league matchup with the Kansas City Monarchs 3-1 on Sunday night at Ernie Vivion Field. Mike DeMilia's team now has a 1-3 overall record, following its first four games of the young season.
The Monarchs took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame on a two-RBI single from Galberto Pena. Then, neither team drove another run across the plate for the next six frames, but the Renegades broke that streak in the home half of the seventh inning, cutting their deficit to 2-1 on a bunt single from Cy Darnell and a Monarchs throwing error. However, Kansas City regained a two-run advantage just one inning later after Darrel Graham scored on a wild pitch. From there, Monarchs starting pitcher Steve Damico finished off a complete game effort on the mound, striking out 18 total batters on Sunday night.
Josh Candrl started on the hill for the Renegades, allowing two runs in the first frame but tossing two scoreless innings after that. Then, Jefferson City had two stellar relief efforts from Clayton Shockley and Cale Willson. Shockley posted six strikeouts over four scoreless frames, and Willson struck out four batters over his two innings of work.
Up next - Jefferson City travels to face Sedalia on Monday, June 3 at 7 p.m. in the third meeting between those two teams already this season. The Renegades and Bombers split their previous two matchups.
