Gorman’s big night lifts the Cardinals to an extra innings win over the Phillies

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. (KMIZ)

The St. Louis Cardinals avoided getting swept by the Phillies on Sunday night with a 5-4 win in extra innings. The red birds still lost the series overall, though, 2-1.

Nolan Gorman led the charge at the dish for St. Louis in the 10-inning thriller. He went 2-for-4 and registered three RBI, including the game-winning RBI single in the final inning. Gorman got the Cardinals on the board first in the opening frame with a two-run homer to right field. He has now hit 10 home runs in 2024.

Despite the early lead, St. Louis never let Philadelphia fall out of it.

In the second inning, the Phillies tied the ball game up at two courtesy of a Bryson Stott RBI double to center and a Johan Rojas RBI sacrifice grounder to shortstop.

Skipper Oli Marmol's group did manage to get a two-run advantage, once again, in the third inning. Alec Burleson hammered a 405-foot two-run homer over the wall in right to go up 4-2 over the home team. However, the Phillies had a response again, as Stott plated two runs on an RBI single to left field to put everyone at four runs.

The game stayed tied until the 10th inning, when Gorman scored Masyn Winn on an RBI single to right field to take a 5-4 lead and, ultimately, win the game.

Ryan Helsley is credited with his 19th save of the season. He came in in the bottom of the 10th and struck out two batters.

Meanwhile, John King will get the win for St. Louis on the hill. He pitched one inning and didn't allow any runs or any hits.

After the three-game series against Philadelphia, St. Louis is now 28-29 overall and in second place in the National League central standings. The birds are a full 7.0 games back from the first-place Milwaukee Brewers.
