Cardinals fall in series finale to Marlins; still take series win
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)
It was not a banner day for Mizzou alum Kyle Gibson, as he took the hill for his second start of the season, on Sunday. The pitcher did end up throwing for seven innings, but let seven earned runs go in the eventual 10-3 loss to the Marlins.
With the loss, the Cardinals did not secure the series sweep, but still won the series overall, 2-1. For Miami, it was the first win of 2024, after an 0-9 start to the year.
Gibson's rough outing started early, as Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Nick Gordon each hit three-run homers in the first inning to get up 6-0 over St. Louis. In the second, the seventh and final earned run that Gibson let up come across home for a seven-run red bird deficit.
After the game, skipper Oli Marmol stressed the importance of Gibson still going for seven innings for the club. Thanks to that outing, the Cardinals were able to stay fresh for the impending series against the Phillies.
STL was relatively quiet at the dish, as Marlins pitcher Max Meyer carried a no-hitter through four innings. However, that was broken up by the bat of Nolan Gorman, who hit his first home run of the season in the fifth to make it a 7-1 game. He actually ended up homering twice in the loss.
Up next - St. Louis will host the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday, April 8. First pitch is slated for 6:45 p.m. at Busch Stadium.
