Mizzou baseball fall shorts of first conference series win
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Mizzou baseball team gave first-year head coach Kerrick Jackson the first SEC win of his MU tenure on Saturday, but could not follow it up with his first SEC series win on Sunday. The Tigers fell 7-6 to the Kentucky Wildcats to lose the series 2-1.
With the loss, Jackson and company dropped to 10-14 overall in 2024 and 1-5 in conference play.
It was a disappointing end to a day where the MU offense constantly seemed to have an answer. Mizzou took the first lead of the game, courtesy of a solo home run from Helias alum Trevor Austin in the first inning. A three-run second inning from the Wildcats gave them the lead, but by the time the third inning rolled around, the Tigers had themselves a one-run lead once again.
The problem, once again, came on the hill. Jackson's pitching staff never really could settle in the series finale, as he went through four pitchers for an attempt at a series win.
Daniel Wissler got the start for MU. He threw for two innings, as three unearned runs got across home plate. Jacob Peaden came in in relief, allowing one earned run, but Ian Lohse let up three, critical runs in the sixth inning, which gave Kentucky the 7-4 lead.
As was the story of the game, the Tiger bats kept them in it until the very end. MU had an opportunity for a walk off win, but fell just short of the big comeback.
Austin, Jedier Hernandez, Kaden Peer and Danny Corona all tallied at least one RBI in the loss. Austin had the best day the dish, though, going 3-for-5.
Up next - Mizzou will travel to Illinois for some rivalry action against the Fighting Illini on Tuesday. First pitch at Grizzlies Ballpark is slated for 6 p.m.
