Mizzou baseball captures rivalry win over Kansas in 10 innings

LAWRENCE, Kansas (KMIZ)

The Mizzou baseball team improved to 9-8 overall in 2024 with a one-run win over Kansas, on Tuesday night. The Tigers topped the Jayhawks 5-4 in 10 innings at Hoglund Ballpark.

KU got out to a two-run lead in the second inning, courtesy of a two run home run from Collier Cranford. After that, though, the MU pitching staff held Kansas to five scoreless innings, as the Tiger offense caught up.

In the third inning, Jeric Curtis started the scoring by coming home on a Jackson Lovich groundout to putt on one the board. One batter later, Jackson Beaman drove in Matt Garcia on an RBI single to tie the game up at two runs apiece and MU wasn't done yet. Beaman would manage to score on a Kansas error to get up 3-2.

The Jayhawks tied it up, again, in the eighth to send the rivalry game to extra innings at Hoglund Park. Kansas tried to make a late push in the bottom of the 10th, after Mizzou had scored two runs at the top of the frame to take the lead, but to no avail.

Brock Lucas earned the win on the hill for the Tigers to improve to 2-0 in 2024. He threw for two innings, allowing one run on three hits. Fellow pitcher Ben Pederson also earned his first save of the season, as he held off KU in that final inning, allowing just one run on two hits and registering two strikeouts.

Up next - Head coach Kerrick Jackson and company will start up SEC action on the road. Mizzou will kickoff the series against rival Arkansas on Friday, March 15 at 6:30 p.m. in Fayetteville.
