Mizzou baseball splits doubleheader with Purdue Fort Wayne
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Mizzou baseball team went 1-1 in doubleheader action against Purdue Fort Wayne, on Saturday. With a win in game two, the Tigers will look to end the series in a tie in the finale on Sunday.
MU lost the first game of the day, as the Mastodons put together a big five-run rally in the eighth inning to take the 8-6 lead. Mizzou did add on one run, to get within one, at the bottom of eighth, however, it was not enough. In the end, Purdue Fort Wayne took a 9-7 win at Taylor Stadium.
Thomas Curry and Jackson Beaman both led the team with three RBI in the game one loss. On the bump, Nic Smith was charged with the loss, after allowing two earned runs in 0.1 innings of action.
Starting pitcher Jayvn Pimental had a solid outing, overall. He struck out seven batters and only allowed one earned run on five hits through five innings of work.
In game two, the Tiger offense woke up, as MU beat the Mastodons 11-1.
Helias alum Trevor Austin hit two home runs in the win, however, Matt Garcia led the team with three RBI.
Carter Rustad was lights out on the bump for head coach Kerrick Jackson. Rustad improved to 3-1 on the year, as he threw six innings of shutout baseball. He struck out eight batters, allowing just four hits. .
Up next - Mizzou and Purdue Fort Wayne will meet one more time. The Tigers will look to end the series in a tie on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Taylor Stadium.
