Mizzou softball improves to 17-2 after weekend series in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KMIZ)

The No. 14 Tiger softball team continued its hot streak over the weekend, improving to 17-2 overall in 2024. Head coach Larissa Anderson and company went undefeated through Big Red Invitational play, beating both Nebraska and Wichita State twice.

On Sunday, MU finished off the undefeated weekend in Lincoln with an 8-2 win against Wichita State to the start the day and a 5-1 win over the Cornhuskers to the end the day.

In game one, Mizzou jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, courtesy of a hit-by-pitch score from Jenna Laird and a home run from Alex Honnold.

The Shockers did cut the Tiger lead to two with a home run in the third inning, however, timely hitting from Kara Daly and Julia Crenshaw sealed the deal, offensively.

In the circle, Marissa McCann improved to 2-0 on Sunday. She pitched for four innings and allowed just on run on three hits with three strikeouts. Sophomore Cierra Harrison took over for McCann and put up a career day. Harrison picked up her first career save, scattering a run on one hit with three strikeouts. Her three-total strikeouts got her to the 100 strikeout milestone in her career.

In game two, Mizzou topped Nebraska 5-1 to conclude the Big Red Invitational.

Senior ace Laurin Krings recorded the complete-game win in the circle, limiting the Cornhuskers to just one run on five hits. It is already Krings' sixth complete game of the season. She is also just three strikeouts away from hitting 500 in her career.

A few Tigers found success at the plate, as well. Laird went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a sacrifice fly, which marked her third multi-RBI game of the season. In addition, Madison Walker, Katie Chester and Kayley Lenger all brought runners home.

Up next - Anderson and company will head to Kansas City to meet the Roos on Wednesday, March 6. Then, MU will open up the Mizzou Softball Stadium with a three-game series against Auburn. Game on against the other SEC Tigers is on March 8.
