Mizzou baseball drops high-scoring series to Northern Kentucky

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Mizzou baseball team wiped out a nine-run Northern Kentucky lead over the course of three innings, but could not complete the comeback in the series rubber match on Sunday. The Norse beat the Tigers 16-15 to drop MU to 5-6 overall.

Head coach Kerrick Jackson and company took a two-run lead into the eighth inning, led by a 3-for-5, four RBI outing from freshman Thomas Curry. Over the course of three innings, the Tigers scored 12 runs and actually managed to take two separate leads later on in the game.

However, the Tiger pitching staff couldn't hold off NKU. Mitch Wood drove in an RBI double in the ninth inning to plate the tying run. Then, a wild pitch brought Northern Kentucky home from third base for what would be the game-winning run.

Jackson Lovich, Jedier Hernandez and Curry all lifted up home runs in the near comeback, with Hernandez matching his career-best hit total, with three.

The loss marks just the 10th time since the start of the 2003 season that mizzou has lost a game when scoring into double-digits.

Mizzou dug deep into the bullpen in Sunday's game, using eight pitchers in the loss. Logan Lunceford got the start for MU, but allowed seven earned runs in a little more than one inning of action. From there, his seven teammates let a combined nine runs go.

Right-handed pitcher Jacob Peaden got charged with the loss, dropping to 1-1 on the season. He pitched the final inning of action, allowing those two game-winning runs.

Up next - Mizzou will continue its home stand to host Lindenwood on Tuesday, March 5. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
