Lincoln football coach resigns; search for a new head coach is on
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Lincoln football team will be in search of new leadership for the 2024 season, as head coach Jermaine Gales turned in his resignation, on Monday.
The news came after Gales went 0-22 in his two seasons as the Blue Tigers' coach, in 2022 and 2023. In the meantime, defensive coordinator Joe Carter will serve as the interim head coach.
“This evening we accepted Coach Gales’ resignation as head football coach,” Vice President for Advancement and Athletics Dr. Kevin Wilson said. “I appreciate his effort leading our football program for the past two seasons. During his tenure, he assembled a roster of quality young men excited about being Blue Tigers and established a solid foundation for our transition to the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC).
The national search for a new coach will begin immediately for Lincoln, as the athletic department is set to make that jump to the GLVC in the 2024-25 school year.
The Lincoln football team has not won a game since 2019, however, keep in mind, the 2020 campaign was interrupted due to COVID-19. In that 2019 season, the Blue Tigers went 1-10. The year prior, in 2018, the group went 3-8. The new head coach will be tasked with bringing winning ways back to the campus, based in Jefferson City.
“Our priority is to identify the absolute best individual to lead our football program in a timely and thorough manner,” Dr. Wilson said in a press release. “With our transition to the GLVC, our future is bright. We are uniquely positioned as the only Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the conference with a long-standing, student-centered faculty and over $60 million dollars in on-campus improvements on the horizon."
