KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Kansas City Chiefs lost a big AFC showdown against the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium, on Sunday, 20-17. The loss dropped KC to 8-5 on the season and third in the AFC standings, behind the first place Ravens and the second place Dolphins.

KC has now lost three out of its last five games. For Buffalo, the win kept the playoff hopes alive, as the group improved to 7-6 on the season.

For a while, the Chiefs looked like they might overcome the 14-point hole they put themselves in in the first half, however, quarterback Patrick Mahomes couldn't pull off any magic on the final offensive series of the game.

At the start of the third quarter, Mahomes and company were down by 10 points, after the Bills came out of the locker room and nailed a 31-yard field goal with a 62-yard drive. However, Kansas City rang off 10, unanswered points courtesy of a Mahomes touchdown pass to rookie Rashee Rice and a Harrison Butker 27-yard field goal.

With less than two minutes in the game, Buffalo drove 48 yards down the field in 12 plays to connect on a 39-yard field goal, one which would end up being the game-winner.

Tempers flared on the Chiefs' sideline as the clock hit zero. The refs called wide receiver Kadarius Tony for a critical offsides penalty on a play that would have resulted in a possible game-winning touchdown for Kansas City. During the postgame press conference, head coach Andy Reid called the call "embarrassing," for the NFL.

Mahomes completed 58 percent of his passes for 271 yards, one touchdown and one interception. His top two targets were Rice and tight end Travis Kelce, who finished with 83 yards on six receptions.

Turnovers and drops continued to be a problem for KC, on Sunday. Both Mahomes and Rice turned the ball over in the loss.

Defensively, safety Mike Edwards led the charge with a team-high 11 total tackles. But, Mizzou alum Nick Bolton also had himself a day in his return to the field. He registered eight total tackles, one of which was for a loss, in his first game since late October.

Up next - Kansas City will head east to face the New England Patriots on Sunday, Dec. 17. Kickoff is slated for 12:00 p.m. at Gillette Stadium.
