DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (KMIZ)
The Mizzou women's basketball team could not pull off a second-straight last second win in the Daytona Beach Classic. The Tigers fell to Kent State 67-64, on Saturday, after leading with less than 20 seconds to play.
It was a wild ending to MU's trip to Florida, as head coach Robin Pingeton's team trailed 63-60 with less than two minutes left to play. Fifth year forward Hayley Frank got to the free throw line a couple of times to take the 64-63 lead with 19 seconds to go. However, it was a heartbreaking finish for the Tigers, as Kent State's Corynne Hauser laid in the game-winning shot with 12 seconds on the clock.
A couple of free throws from Katie Shumate, after a foul from Frank, cemented the three-point win for the Golden Flashes.
Frank set a new career-high, leading the team with 30 points on the night. She also added on eight rebounds, a couple steals and a couple blocks.
Sophomore guard Ashton Judd was the only other Tiger to get into double-digits against Kent State, as she tallied 13 points. No one else scored more than seven points in the loss.
For the second-straight game, MU also lost the turnover battle. Pingeton's group turned the ball over seven times in the first half and four in the second, for a total of 11 turnovers to the Golden Flashes' nine.
With the loss, the Tigers drop to 5-2 on the season.
