ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)

The 2023 season did not go the way that anyone in the Cardinals clubhouse intended, but the team did manage to close out the year with a 4-3 win against the Cincinnati Reds, on Sunday.

However, Sunday's season finale at Busch Stadium really wasn't about a win or a loss. It was all about honoring veteran red bird pitcher Adam Wainwright. Uncle Charlie made one, final, outing in a Cardinal uniform, as he struck out in a pinch hit appearance for St. Louis.

The 42-year-old had his fair share of ups and downs in 2023, but he did manage to reach the goal of 200 wins in his final season. He went 200-128 with a 3.53 ERA in 18 seasons, all of which were spent in St. Louis.

The Cardinals honored Wainwright before the game, as well. The goodbye included appearances from his former teammates Yadier Molina and Albert Pujols.

As for his club, it was not a banner year. St. Louis finished 71-91 overall, losing 22 more games than skipper Oli Marmol and company did just one year before. It's St. Louis' worst record since 1990, when the club went 70-92.
