Boonville High School athletic trophies accidentally given away at football game
BOONVILLE, Mo. (KMIZ)
Several people who attended Boonville High School's football season opener may have been given a piece of the school's athletic history on accident.
In a letter to parents and staff, Boonville Superintendent Mark Harvey said trophies, plaques and memorabilia were displayed at the Sept. 1 game, and were subsequently given away without the knowledge of the Boonville Board of Education, Boonville High School principal or him.
"Neither the Boonville Board of Education, BHS Principal Hodge, nor I had advanced or prior knowledge of the intention to disperse our sacred achievements and history in this manner," Harvey said in the letter. "I am working with district employees to review how this occurred. Neither my intention nor Boonville R-1’s is to disperse items this way. In the future, should an incident arise where there is a need to store or consider the dispersal of memorabilia, a group of stakeholders will be involved in determining how to address such an issue in a manner befitting the respect our history deserves."
Harvey is asking those who were erroneously given any items to return it.
"Each plaque, trophy, or recognition item holds a special place in the hearts of our school community. It would be very kind if you would assist me in locating each piece of Boonville’s history," he said in the letter.
Harvey is requesting that those with memorabilia to take a photo of the item and email it to news@bpsk12.net, or to call 660-882-7474 and give a description to the receptionist.
Harvey later said in a statement that the school doesn't have an inventory of what was given away and that the school was made aware of the incident on Saturday, Sept. 2.
The memorabilia had been taken down from inside the building for various renovations. Harvey said a lot of it was believed to be in storage for at least two years.
A booster with the program told ABC 17 News that most of the items that were given away were photographs.
