Royals offense falls short in series finale against Red Sox
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Kansas City bats struggled to get going against Boston pitcher Chris Sale on Sunday afternoon, as the Red Sox won the rubber match 7-3.
Sale pitched for five innings, not allowing a single run on two hits and striking out five batters. His relief held strong, as well, as the four pitchers that followed allowed just three runs in the remaining innings.
The Royals only got outhit by one, 9-8, however, the team couldn't capitalize on the runners it got on base.
Salvador Perez and Dairon Blanco were the only two KC batters to get runs across home plate. Perez singled in the sixth to score Bobby Witt Jr. and Blanco single to center in the ninth to score Nick Loftin and Drew Waters.
Zack Greinke fell to 1-14 in 2023 with Sunday's loss. He came in for Taylor Clarke, after he threw for just one inning. Greinke pitched for a little bit more than three innings and allowed three earned runs on five hits.
Up next - Kansas City will host the Chicago White Sox at Kauffman Stadium on Monday, Sept. 4. First pitch is at 1:10 p.m.
