Saints spoil Chiefs’ preseason opener
NEW ORLEANS, La. (KMIZ)
The Kansas City Chiefs fell in the group's preseason-opening game against New Orleans, 26-24, courtesy of a last-second, 31-yard field goal from the Saints.
Patrick Mahomes did make the start for Kansas City, but the MVP only stayed on the field for one drive. The drive, itself, was pretty lackluster, as it ended with a failed fourth-and-1 play. The QB took just five snaps.
After Mahomes' exit, former Mizzou quarter Blaine Gabbert played for most of the first half. He put KC within ten points, courtesy of a touchdown pass to Richie James. Gabbert went 4-8 overall, throwing for 59 yards and one touchdown.
Third-string QB Shane Buechele had the best stats of the game at that position. He went 11-18 for 155 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He got the Chiefs a four-point lead with an eight-yard touchdown pass to Kekoa Crawford in the third quarter to make it a 21-17 ball game.
Kicker Harrison Butker knocked in his first field goal of 2023, for 36 yards, which kept his team on top in the fourth quarter, however, New Orleans just managed to edge out the reigning Super Bowl champions.
Up next - Kansas City will stay on the road against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday, Aug. 19. Kick off is at 7 p.m. on the same field the Chiefs won the Super Bowl on in Feb.
