Drinkwitz talks week two of fall camp; addresses quarterbacks, offensive line and more

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Mizzou head football coach Eli Drinkwitz met with the media Saturday to wrap up week two of fall camp.

The Tigers have a lot of competitions happening right now in camp, with the most notable being at the quarterback position. Returning starter Brady Cook is the man to beat out in the competition with Sam Horn and Jake Garcia fighting for the starting role.

Drinkwitz was brief with his quarterback answers, but comments on the leadership that each of them are bringing.

"Brady, I think he's a natural leader. His gas meter is through the roof" Drinkwitz said. "Sam is having to develop that with you know being a good teammate getting to know the guys. Jake has obviously been doing that before so it's kind of natural to those two guys."

Another competition that is heating up is on the offensive line. Drinkwitz said at the end of week one of fall camp that there were eight to nine guys competing for the starting roles, but now that number has been narrowed to seven to eight.

Drinkwitz also alluded to returning center Connor Tollison securing his role again in the middle, which means incoming transfer Cam'Ron Johnson has been working at guard.

"We moved him (Johnson) up with guard today," Drinkwitz said. "He still will snap after practice and be ready, but right now Connor has done such a nice job that it's time to let us solidify that job and see if there's another competition available."

Former Mizzou quarterback Chase Daniel was also in Columbia this week to check out fall camp. Jokingly Drinkwitz said he was worried about his job security with Daniel in town, but in seriousness he said he fits right in with the groups "something to prove" motto.

"He's got incredible with the players because of him playing here, being under recruited and always had something to prove," Drinkwitz said. "He played so long in the NFL and always had that right kind of chip on his shoulder. He shared his story with the team and was able to give insight to both sides of the ball."

The team will take the day off on Sunday to rest before returning to the practice field on Monday for week three of camp. Week one kick off at Faurot will be Aug. 31 at 7 p.m.
