Cardinals trade shortstop Paul DeJong to Blue Jays

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)

Longtime Cardinal Paul DeJong is headed to Canada. Just before the MLB trade deadline, the St. Louis Cardinals traded the shortstop to the Toronto Blue Jays for a minor league pitcher.

Right-hander Matt Svanson will joins the Cardinals organization, following that trade. The 24-year-old was a 13th round draft pick for Toronto in the 2021 draft. He has combined to go 4-1 win with a 1.11 ERA in 26 games, split between high and low A.

DeJong has spent his entire Major League career in St. Louis. His best year came in 2019 when he earned an All-Star selection, hitting a career-best 30 home runs in that season. In 2023, so far, he has recorded 13 home runs and registered 32 RBI, hitting .233.
